Cage in ironwork of the bell ringing the belfry: inscription by decree of 15 September 1952

Origin and history

The belfry of Caromb is a clock tower erected in 1562 in the municipality of Caromb, Vaucluse. Backed by the old communal house (used as a town hall until 1926), it also served as a watchtower. His base even housed a temporary prison. To improve the audibility of the bells, a campanile was added in 1783 at the top of the structure.

Ranked a historic monument by order of 12 September 1952, the belfry is protected for its ironwork cage housing the bell. This monument illustrates the late medieval civil architecture, typical of provençal villages, where the towers served as both a temporal landmark and a warning system.

Today owned by the municipality, the belfry remains a symbol of local heritage. Its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments underlines its historical and architectural importance, while at the same time testifying to the evolution of municipal uses between the 16th and 20th centuries.
