Origin and history
The Battle of Tilly-sur-Seulles Museum is housed in the chapel of Notre-Dame-du-Val, a 12th-century building located in Tilly-sur-Seulles (Calvados). It commemorates the violent clashes that took place in this strategic village between June 7 and 26, 1944, during the Second World War. This place was a key issue for the Allies in their advance towards Caen, taken and taken 23 times before his final release.
The fighting mainly opposed the 30th British Corps to the German troops, marked by repeated assaults of infantry and tanks, especially against the German Panthers. The battle culminated on 18 June 1944 with the British victory, finally releasing the village. The museum preserves artifacts found there, photographs and documents illustrating this bloody episode.
Outside, a stele pays tribute to British and Canadian soldiers who fell during the fighting. The medieval chapel, witness to these events, now houses a collection dedicated to the memory of this battle, highlighting its role in the History of Normandy and Liberation.
