Origin and history
The church Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais of Champagné-Saint-Hilaire, dated the 12th century, is distinguished by its Romanesque portal, the only protected element since 1925. This portal, bent with two rollers of stone harpsichords, is decorated with fine sculptures and a moulure archvolt. The outer arch harps systematically represent a caped animal evoking a hippocampus, a rare and stylized motif characteristic of Poitevin Romanesque art.
The location of the building in the Department of Vienna (code INSEE 86052) is attested by the Merimée and Monumentum bases. The precise address, 5 Rue de l'Eglise, corresponds to the GPS coordinates available, although the cartographic accuracy is considered poor (level 5/10). The portal, a communal property, is the only item listed in the inventory of Historic Monuments for this site.
No information is available on the current use of the church (visits, cults, or reassignment), or on any other notable architectural elements. Sources are limited to portal descriptions and administrative data, without reference to sponsors, artisans, or historical events related to the building.
