Origin and history

The Maziol barn is a barn- barn built in 1802, located in the commune of Nieudan, in the department of Cantal (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). This elongated building, isolated from other agricultural buildings, is characteristic of the rural architecture of Xaintria. Its lauze roof and interior fittings, preserved intact, illustrate the construction techniques and agricultural uses of the era.

The south façade has two separate doors: one gives access to the barn on the ground floor, while the other, sheltered by a porch covered in a pavilion, leads to the barn via a masonry basket. These functional elements reflect a rational organization of space, adapted to both livestock housing and crop storage. The building thus embodies the vernacular heritage linked to breeding and mountain farming.

Ranked a historic monument by decree of 17 September 2007, the Maziol barn is recognized for its authenticity and exceptional state of conservation. Its inscription underlines the importance of preserving these material testimonies of the rural practices of the early nineteenth century, in a territory marked by a strong peasant identity and an adaptation to the constraints of relief.
