The chimney in its entirety, including its plated area (Box CT 718): inscription by order of 27 June 2002
Origin and history
The chimney called L'Éperon is an emblematic industrial vestige of the island of La Réunion, located in the commune of Saint-Paul. It belonged to a former sugar factory, a symbol of the economic importance of sugar cane cultivation in this French overseas region. Its impressive architecture and conservation make it a material testimony to local industrial history.
Classified as an additional inventory of Historic Monuments since June 27, 2002, this chimney is fully protected, including its plated site. This official recognition underscores his heritage interest and his role in the collective memory of Réunion. Today it is owned by a private company, which raises the question of its preservation and accessibility to the public.
The island of La Réunion, where this monument is located, has had an economy largely oriented towards sugar production since the 19th century. The factories, like the one whose chimney is the last vestige, structured the social and economic life of the surrounding communes. They employed a large workforce and influenced local dynamics, while participating in landscape transformation.
The chimney of L'Éperon, by its location in Saint-Paul, also recalls the territorial organization of the sugar industry on the island. The plants were often located near the cane growing areas, thus facilitating the transport and rapid processing of the raw material. This monument thus illustrates both an industrial technique and an economic geography specific to Réunion.
