Origin and history

Breuilpont Castle, located in the Eure in Normandy, is an emblematic building of the second half of the eighteenth century. Built on partially buried cellars, it consists of a main body of nine spans, marked by a central pediment pierced by an oculus and a balcony supported by consoles. Its elevations, made of coated honeycombs, are enhanced by chained cutting stone. At the back, an hors-oeuvre cylindrical pavilion and small wooden bays complete the architecture. The estate also includes L-shaped commons and a landscaped park in the 19th century, keeping ice, water room and remarkable essences.

The seigneury of Breuilpont, formerly linked to the lords of Ivry and then to Diane de Poitiers, was acquired in 1700 by Louis Doublet, a general farmer, to whom it is attributed the construction of the present castle. The building, later modified, saw the addition of an honorary staircase in an outstanding pavilion. In 1824, the Count of Talleyrand-Périgord became the owner and remodelled the salons. The estate, preserved in its right of way, illustrates the organization of a seigneury in the eighteenth to nineteenth centuries, with its wall of enclosure, its hydraulic network and its outbuildings.

Ranked Historic Monument in 2017, the castle includes, in addition to the main body, communes and a delimited park, reflecting the architectural and landscape evolution of a seigneurial property. Its official address, 1 Place du Général-de-Gaulle in Breuilpont, confirms its anchoring in the village, dominated by this building both residential and symbolic. The accuracy of its location is assessed as very satisfactory (note 8/10), thanks to GPS coordinates and cross sources (Merimée, Monumentum).
