Origin and history

The castle of Labastide-Marnhac stands on a rocky site, forming a heteroclite set of buildings organised around a central courtyard. This architectural complex consists of a quadrangular house of the 19th century, an 18th century building incorporating a medieval square tower, as well as a 15th century primitive house, accompanied by a tower of staircase in view. The latter preserves remarkable elements such as ground beams ceilings, a monumental carved fireplace and fragments of painted decorations dating back to the 15th century, bearing witness to its medieval past.

The current structure is the result of several construction phases, with architectural traces of the 13th and 15th centuries, although some parts have been redesigned or added later, such as the 19th century house. The castle, partially protected since 2016, includes remains of ditches and retaining walls, reflecting its defensive and residential importance throughout the eras. In particular, the west wing and the entrance gate are listed as Historic Monuments.

Property of the commune, the castle illustrates the local architectural evolution, from its medieval origins to its modern transformations. Its variable state of conservation, with a location deemed satisfactory a priori (note 7/10), makes it both a historical and a heritage site, anchored in the landscape of Labastide-Marnhac, in the Lot department.
