Origin and history

The castle of Jarzé, located in the department of Maine-et-Loire, is a construction initiated by Jean Bourré, treasurer of France, in the years 1470-1480, shortly after the castle of Plessis-Bourré. This ambitious project remained unfinished, but the walls and vaults of the 15th century central body still remain today. The castle illustrates the residential architecture of the late Middle Ages, marked by defensive elements and sophisticated interior arrangements, as evidenced by the preserved construction specifications.

In 1792, the castle was sold as a national property and acquired by Pierre-Jean Deurbroucq, a merchant. After the fire caused by the Salesian army in 1794, he undertook a major restoration, modifying the main façade and interiors. Two towers and the original stairwells are then demolished. The archival documents, such as a 1603 report and the views made by Gaignières in 1699, enable the initial state of the castle and its evolution to be partially reconstructed.

Jarzé Castle is listed as a historical monument in 2008 for its facades, roofs, interiors (basement, ground floor, first floor) and its extensive park, including alleys, ponds, terraces and gardens. These elements reflect both the medieval heritage of Jean Bourré and the transformations of the 18th and 19th centuries. The estate, now shared between private and communal property, preserves traces of the original distributions and decorations under the tuft trimmings added between 1794 and 1809.
