Origin and history

The Claies mansion is an emblematic building located in Asnières-sur-Vègre, in the current Sarthe department, in the Pays de la Loire region. This house, built in the late 15th century, illustrates the civil architecture of the late medieval period. Although its precise history remains partially documented, its inscription as a historic monument in 1996 demonstrates its heritage importance.

In the 1930s, the manor house suffered significant degradation, resulting in partial loss of its original structure. A subsequent restoration of the building resulted in the restoration of the building by employing original elements reassembled in situ. This process preserved the architectural characteristics of the 15th century, while integrating the traces of the transformations experienced over the centuries.

The Maine region, where Asnières-sur-Vègre is located, was historically marked by a rural and seigneurial economy. Manor houses, such as the Claies, served as residences for local noble or bourgeois families, playing a central role in the social and agricultural organization of the surrounding territories. Their presence often reflected the power and prestige of their owners, while participating in community life.

The inclusion of the mansion in historical monuments in 1996 helped to protect and enhance this heritage, highlighting its architectural and historical interest. Today, it is a testimony to medieval construction techniques and to the evolution of rural buildings over the centuries.
