Origin and history

The church of Saint-Just de Courbous is a Romanesque religious building, located in the Mass Courbous, on the territory of the municipality of Sournia. This monument is part of the typical architectural landscape of Roussillon, marked by a strong presence of Romanesque churches, often isolated in hamlets or rural areas. Romanesque churches, like that of Saint-Just, played a central role in the life of medieval communities.

They served not only as a place of worship, but also as a gathering point for the inhabitants, reflecting the social and religious organization of the time. Their stone construction and sober style were adapted to the resources and needs of local populations, while symbolizing the Christian faith in areas sometimes far from the major urban centres.
