Origin and history

The town gate of Jonzac, located in the municipality of the same name in New Aquitaine, is a monument built between the 13th and 15th centuries. It consists of a 13th-century vault, topped by a covered crenelage on mâchicoulis, whose embrasures are pierced by crosses. The arch of the bay has been deformed over time, and the traps have been removed to expand the passage, reflecting subsequent adaptations to its initial use.

Classified as historical monuments by decree of 25 November 1926, this gate is an example of medieval defensive architecture. It is now owned by the municipality of Jonzac. Its present state shows traces of structural changes, such as the enlargement of the opening, probably to facilitate traffic or adapt to new urban needs.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its heritage importance. The gate is located precisely at 6 James Sclafer Street, although its GPS location is considered satisfactory without being perfect. It bears witness to Jonzac's urban history, marked by fortifications designed to protect the city during the Middle Ages.
