Origin and history
The Saint-Pierre des Essarts church, located in Essarts-en-Bocage in the Vendée department, is a Catholic building whose history dates back to the 12th century. Although the current construction dates from the 19th century, it occupies the site of a former medieval priory, destroyed during the Vendée War by the infernal columns. This place preserves a 12th century crypt, composed of three naves, which bears witness to its religious and funeral past. Several tombs are still visible, and this crypt was classified as a historical monument by order of 16 August 1971.
The silver procession cross of the church bears the arms of Mademoiselle de Nemours, lady of Essarts and granddaughter of the Duke of Vendôme, highlighting the historical links between the monument and the local aristocracy. An ancient place of pilgrimage, the church was once the heart of the parish of Saint-Pierre-des-Essarts, whose limits corresponded exactly to those of the commune. Since 1997, it has been dependent on the parish of Sainte-Croix-des-Essarts, which is part of the diocese of Luçon.
The present building, although rebuilt in the 19th century, perpetuates the memory of the medieval priory and its role in the religious and social life of the region. The crypt, the only classified vestige of the 12th century, offers a precious architectural and historical overview, while the church remains an active Catholic place of worship, anchored in the local heritage.
