Origin and history

Cinema l'Ambiance, located in Senonches in the Centre-Val de Loire region, was built during the 3rd quarter of the 20th century. This cinema, designed by architect Marcel Barbier, was inaugurated in 1958. It is distinguished by its location on a deep plot, allowing to add a building dedicated to offices and staff accommodation. The room, with a capacity of 450 seats, still retains today most of its original elements, such as seats, strapons, linoleum and the reception distribution box.

The cinema was registered as a Historical Monument by order of 16 June 2003, thus protecting the entire building (cadastre A 868). Owned by the municipality of Senonches, it is located at 8-10 rue de Flanders-Dunkerque, although GPS coordinates indicate an approximate address at 5 Rue aux Merles. The location of the monument is considered satisfactory in accordance with the available precision criteria.

The architecture and interior layout of the Ambience Cinema reflect the characteristics of the post-war cinemas in France. Its exceptional state of conservation, including technical equipment and period materials, makes it a rare testimony of this period. The hall, still active or preserved, illustrates the cultural importance of cinema in small French cities during the second half of the 20th century.
