Origin and history

The Château d'Avauges, located north of Saint-Romain-de-Popey in the Rhône department, has its origins in the 14th century. Originally owned by the family of Varey, Lyon traders in silks, he passed in 1555 to the family of Albon, a Lyon bourgeois anobly from the thirteenth century. The medieval castle disappeared at the end of the 16th century, replaced by a modern building, whose current facades and roofs date mainly from the 18th century. A tower in ruins with the Varey coat of arms, probably an old guard tower, remains nearby, while a second tower dominates the village, both linked to a defensive system monitoring the Turdine valley.

The major transformations took place in 1765 with works on the north facade, then in the nineteenth century with a neo-Gothic rereading under the Second Empire. The chapel, consecrated in 1730, has an Empire decor, and the park, redesigned in 1880 by landscape architect Edward André, adopted an English style, abandoning the straight lines of the garden to French. An orangery and a basin fed by Turdine, now out of service since 1999, complemented this set. Interiors, not open to the public, retain neo-rock woodwork and medieval elements in the west wing, such as vaults and thick walls.

The castle remained in the female progeny of the Marquis of Albon until today, after the death of the last Marquis in 2015. It is partially classified as a Historic Monument since 1981 and 2010, covering facades, roofs, chapel, and part of the park. Although the exteriors are accessible during Heritage Days, the interiors do not visit. The site is also linked to personalities such as Julie de Lespinasse, born in the castle, and André d'Albon (1760–1834), Marquis, Mayor of Lyon and Saint-Romain-de-Popey.
