Châtelet d'accès au château (cad. A 178): inscription by order of 11 December 1991
Origin and history
The château de Chéronne is a medieval monument located in the commune of Tuffé Val de la Chéronne, Sarthe (Land of the Loire). This site, whose location is estimated to be passable (level 5/10), maintains an access chestnut dated from the Middle Ages, the only element protected by an inscription under the Historic Monuments since December 11, 1991. Available sources, such as the Merimée and Monumentum base, confirm its heritage status but do not detail its architectural history or its occupants.
In medieval times, castles like the one in Chéronne played a central role in the feudal organization of the region. They served as both a seigneurial residence, a strategic checkpoint for roads or streams (here, the Cheronne), and a symbol of local power. Sarthe, which was integrated into Maine County and the Plantagenet estate, was then marked by a rural economy and conflicts related to rivalries between lords or the Hundred Years War.
The current remains, like the chestnutlet, bear witness to this defensive and administrative function, typical of the small fortresses of the time.
