Origin and history
The Château de Montreuil, located in Montreuil-sur-Loir in the department of Maine-et-Loire (region Pays de la Loire), is a building built in the second half of the 19th century. It is distinguished by its facades and roofs, as well as its portal, designed by architect René Hodé. The decoration of the octagonal lounge on the ground floor is also one of the remarkable elements of this monument, which was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 16 February 2018. The right-of-way of the castle is delimited on the cadastre, covering plots 892 to 894 of section A.
The architect René Hodé, assisted by Achille Léger-Larbouilhat, marked this castle of its style, typical of 19th century bourgeois architecture. The location of the castle, at the 1 Chemin du Port, is specified in the Mérimée and Monumentum bases, with an accuracy deemed satisfactory a priori. This monument illustrates the importance of aristocratic or bourgeois residences in the rural landscape of Maine-et-Loire, a region marked at that time by an agricultural economy and social transformations linked to industrialization.
The protections granted in 2018 relate specifically to the facades, roofs, gate and interior decoration of the octagonal lounge. These elements reflect the care given to the aesthetics and comfort of the homes of this period, often inspired by neoclassical or eclectic currents. The Château de Montreuil, although less documented than other major monuments, bears witness to the architectural and social evolution of rural France in the 19th century.
