Façades and roofs of the castle and the two entrance pavilions; entrance portal and grid; large living room and its decor (cad. B 120): entry by order of 28 December 1981
Origin and history
The Château de Montplaisant, located in Montagnat in the department of Ain, is a 18th and 19th century building, marked by a sober and massive architecture. The main building, complemented by two entrance pavilions, a gate and a wrought iron gate, reflects the stylistic influences of its time. Its large living room, with its preserved decor, facades and roofs, were inscribed in historical monuments by order of 28 December 1981.
The four-column porch and orangery, probably added under the Empire, modify the original aspect of the castle, described differently in the departmental archives. Inside, some original elements remain, such as 18th-century woodwork (Louis XV or Louis XVI style), fireplaces and a pink stone staircase. The estate was once accessible by a tree driveway of more than two kilometers, leading to a monumental entrance. The garden, structured with charmilles (one in the form of "H"), two terraces to the south and a wall of fence in the shape of a tower, bears witness to a careful landscaping.
No original furniture was preserved, but the remaining architectural and landscape elements offer an overview of the evolution of the castle between the 18th and 19th centuries. The site, partially protected, illustrates the adaptation of aristocratic residences to the tastes and needs of successive epochs, while preserving traces of their former splendor. The accuracy of its location is assessed as "very satisfactory" (note 8/10), and the castle is referenced in the Merimée base under the code Insee 01254, attached to the commune of Montagnat.
