Origin and history

The Château de Vermise is a monument located in the commune of Sainte-Maure, in the department of the Aube, in the Grand Est region. It is close to Saint-Benoist-sur-Seine and constitutes an architectural vestige marked by its seigneurial history. This castle was the center of a seigneury successively dependent on Saint-Sepulcre and Villacerf, before being attached to the royal town hall of Grande-Rivière. Today, the original castle remains only emblematic elements such as the front door and its two peppers, characteristic of 16th century defensive architecture.

The front door and its pepper towers are attributed to Noël Coiffart, a notable figure having held the post of Mayor of Troyes. These architectural elements testify to the importance of the site at that time. Later, in the 18th century, Louis Claude Huez built an adjacent pavilion, called the Pavillon de la Charme, which he lived in from 1750. This pavilion adds a distinct residential and stylistic dimension to the estate.

The Château de Vermise was listed as a historical monument in 1977, recognizing its heritage value. This protection allows the remains still visible to be preserved, while stressing the historic role of the castle in the region. The links between this monument, its architecture and its evolution reflect the seigneurial and administrative dynamics of the Dawn throughout the centuries.
