Origin and history

Coulans Castle, located in the commune of Coulans-sur-Gée (Sarthe, Pays de la Loire), is a building built mainly in the 18th century. It is part of the historical landscape of Maine, an area marked by a strong seigneurial presence. The estate, surrounded by moat and organized in square, reflects the aristocratic residential architecture of the time, with a housing body extended by low wings and outbuildings.

The land of Coulans, a former barony attached to the County of Suze, belonged to the Champagne family in the 17th century. In 1680 Paul Gaultier, secretary of the prince of Condé, acquired it before transmitting it to his niece, Marie Renée Gaultier de Bésigny. The latter, wife of Denis Pasquier (1698–1883), adviser to the Paris Parliament, allows the castle to remain in their descendants until today. This family bond illustrates the anchoring of the monument in local and parliamentary history.

The castle has been partially protected since 1980 with an inscription to historical monuments covering its facades and roofs. Its architecture, combining classical elegance and defensive devices (douves), makes it a characteristic example of the noble residences of the eighteenth century in Sarthe. The water moat and the masonry land underline both its prestige and its medieval heritage, although rebuilt in modern times.

Today, Coulans Castle remains a testimony to the seigneurial and parliamentary history of the region. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments in 1980 guarantees the preservation of this heritage, while offering an overview of the aristocratic life in the Pays de la Loire in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
