Origin and history
Beauvoir Castle, located in Beauvoir-Wavans in the Pas-de-Calais department, is an example of 18th century rural housing. Built in 1783 by architect Antoine du Bois for the Beaulaincourt family, it embodies a modern agricultural estate, combining houses, outbuildings (granges, sheds, saddlery, etc.), vegetable garden and park. This type of construction reflects a functional organization of life in the countryside before the French Revolution, integrating agricultural and residential activities into the same architectural complex.
The monument has been listed as a historic monument since 2016, protecting the entire castle, its pavilions, commons, vegetable garden, courtyard, park and fence walls. This site illustrates a pivotal period in French rural history, where agricultural fields were modernized to meet the economic and social needs of the time. The region, marked by landscapes of valleys and plateaus, was then a transitional space between the kingdoms of France and Spain, with an economy largely oriented towards agriculture and livestock.
Beauvoir-Wavans, a commune born in 1973 of the merger of Beauvoir-Rivière (formerly in the Somme) and Wavans-sur-l-l--Authie (Pas-de-Calais), is part of the landscapes of the Val d'Authie, a historical border area. The castle, with its outbuildings, bears witness to a rural way of life organised around polyculture and livestock breeding, activities still dominant in Ternois in the eighteenth century. The presence of protected natural areas (Natura 2000, ZNIEFF) around the site also underlines the ecological importance of this valley, shaped by the Authian River and its tributaries.
The architecture of the castle, sober and functional, contrasts with the more ostentatious constructions of the urban aristocracy of the period. Antoine du Bois, his architect, designed a coherent set where each element (logis, commons, park) responds to a precise use, reflecting the ideals of efficiency and rationality of the Enlightenment. The estate, although not open to the public, remains a valuable testimony of the agricultural and social history of the Hauts-de-France before revolutionary upheavals.
The commune of Beauvoir-Wavans, now attached to the community of municipalities of Ternois, retains this heritage as a marker of its historical identity. The castle, with its fence walls and alleyways, recalls the spatial organization of the 18th century rural estates, where the separation between private and agricultural spaces was clearly defined. Its recent inscription in the Historical Monuments ensures the preservation of this heritage for future generations.
