Origin and history

The Château de Lussac is a 30 hectare wine estate located in the municipality of Lussac, Gironde, in the heart of the lussac-saint-emilion appellation. Built in 1876 for Gaston Montouroy, its architecture combines 19th century classicalism and Renaissance elements, with a central body flanked by two pavilions and surmounted by a monumental pediment. This castle illustrates the importance of wine estates in the Bordeaux region, where the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie invest in the production of quality wines.

On the night of 19-20 September 1898, a fire completely ravaged the castle, destroying furniture, archives, jewellery and business books, for an estimated damage of 380,000 francs. Mathieu Puyancher, a 17-year-old former employee dismissed for dissatisfaction, is sentenced to 20 years of hard labour for this act. Only the cellar is spared, allowing the partial continuation of the wine-growing activity. The reconstruction, faithful to the original style, is undertaken immediately after the disaster, marking the resilience of the owner family.

Passed on as an inheritance to the Marquis de Sercey, the estate remained in its progeny until 1980, before passing under the direction of Olivier Roussel for 15 years. In 2000, Griet and Hervé Laviale acquired the castle and undertook important works, including the development of a circular cuvier by architect Philippe Mazières. Since 2022, Frédéric Stévenin, director of the PAI partners fund and owner of several Bordeaux wines, has been the new owner, perpetuating the wine tradition of the estate.

The terroir of the Château de Lussac is based on argilo-calcar croupes, ideal for the cultivation of merlot (77%) and free cabernet (23%). The estate produces two wines: a red AOC (80% merlot, 20% frank cabernet) and a white, Le Libertin de Lussac, assemblage of sauvignons and semillon. The methods combine manual and mechanical harvesting, with a breeding in French oak barrels, reflecting the qualitative requirement of Saint-Émilion wines.
