Origin and history

The Château de Rochegude, located in Saint-Privat-d'Allier in the Haute-Loire department, is a 13th-century medieval building. It was partly dismantled in the 17th century and belonged to the powerful Mercœur and Montlaur families, which marked local history. This castle is a testimony of the defensive architecture of the period and the seigneurial influence in the region.

Saint-Privat-d'Allier, crossed by the 45th parallel north, is a rural town located at 880 meters above sea level. Its development was linked to the path of Santiago de Compostela (via Podiensis), the first stage after Le Puy-en-Velay. The village became an important place for pilgrims as early as the 10th century, promoting its economic and cultural development.

The toponym of Saint-Privat-d'Allier originated in Saint Privat de Mende, and the commune was temporarily renamed Privat-la-Roche during the Revolution. An ancient path, mentioned by Jean-René Mestre, crossed the communal territory, linking Saint-Paulien to Monistrol-d'Allier, former Condate of the Table de Puisinger. This historic road network reinforces the strategic importance of the area from ancient times.

The Château de Rochegude, although partially destroyed, remains a symbol of local feudal power. The Mercœur and Montlaur families, mentioned in the sources, embody this seigneurial domination that structured the social and political life of the region for centuries. Their architectural and historical heritage is still visible in the current landscape.

Today, Saint-Privat-d'Allier retains a strong identity linked to its medieval and jacquarian past. The commune, classified as a rural area with scattered habitat, still attracts hikers and pilgrims thanks to its heritage and its position on the GR65. The Château de Rochegude, although less documented, remains a key part of this historical and cultural heritage.
