Origin and history

The Château Plaisance, located in Macau, New Aquitaine, is a historical wine monument erected at the end of the 18th century. This castle, characteristic of neo-classical architecture, was built for Jean Cavalie, an owner whose monogram "CL" still remains today. Its orientation towards the Garonne and its strict facade, embellished with a double-flyed pole, reflect the influence of the aesthetic cannons of the time, while integrating practical functions related to wine production.

The building, attributed to architect François Lhote, consists of a house raised on a basement housing cellars, framed by two low wings of commons. These elements draw a court of honor typical of the aristocratic or bourgeois homes of the period. The castle, at the hinge of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, illustrates the transition between the eras by its style and its layout. Its pier and fence walls, protected since 1993, underline its heritage and functional importance in the girondin landscape.

Ranked as a Historic Monument, Plaisance Castle was the subject of two distinct levels of protection: an inscription in 1993 covering the house, the commons, the walls and the pier, followed by a partial classification in 1998 for all buildings, excluding the interiors already registered. These measures reflect the architectural and historical value of the whole, linked both to the wine history of the region and to the evolution of the styles between the Ancient Regime and the Revolution.

The location of the castle, on departmental road 107 in Macau (code Insee 33262), makes it an important part of the Gironde heritage. Its approximate address, 93 Chemin du Bord de l'Eau, and its proximity to the Garonne reinforce its anchoring in a territory marked by river and wine activities. The accuracy of its location, assessed as "a priori satisfactory", makes it possible to envisage further studies or visits to deepen its knowledge.
