Origin and history
The Château d'Escorolles, located in the commune of Cheylade in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, has its origins in the 13th century. Although partially destroyed by the English, it was rebuilt around 1424, incorporating a characteristic 15th century tower. This monument illustrates medieval defensive architecture, while undergoing further transformations, including an open house in the 18th century, then remodelling in the 19th and 20th centuries. Drainage works were also carried out to preserve its structure.
Abandoned for more than twenty years, the castle was acquired in 2015 by Vincent Callies, who undertook a complete restoration to save this heritage. The facades and roofs, bearing witness to its turbulent history, have been protected as historical monuments since 21 June 1994, highlighting its architectural and cultural importance.
The site is part of the landscape of Cantal Castles, a region marked by rich medieval history and conflicts related to the Hundred Years' War. Its evolution reflects the successive adaptations of fortified buildings, from defensive to residential, before becoming a local symbol to be preserved.
