Origin and history
Rochefort Station is a major railway monument from the 1st quarter of the 20th century, located in the department of Charente-Maritime, New Aquitaine. It was built in 1913 according to the plans of architect Pierre Esquié for the State Railways, replacing a first station opened in 1857 and then destroyed. Its current building, characterized by original signage and a metal glassware inspired by La Rochelle, embodies the railway architecture of the time.
The station played a key role as a forklift station on the Nantes-Orléans – Saintes line, as well as on the Aigrefeuille-Le Thou line in Rochefort, now downgraded. It was a strategic node for the transport of passengers and goods, thanks to its proximity to the commercial port. Partially disused after the closure of secondary lines in the 1950s, it remains a central point of the TER Nouvelle-Aquitaine network and Intercités.
Since December 28, 1984, the Rochefort station has maintained interior features dating from 1962. It symbolizes both the heritage of the State Railways and the adaptation of infrastructure to modern needs, with services such as the reception of travellers, shops, and developed intermodality (urban and regional buses). Its architecture and history reflect the evolution of transport in France in the 20th century.
Today, the station remains a living place, served by main lines (Nantes-Bordeaux) and regional trains (La Rochelle-Saintes, Angoulême). It also houses public facilities such as ticket terminals, a press area, and accessible services. Its location in the city centre, Place Françoise Dorléac, makes it a point of convergence for the inhabitants and visitors of the town of Rochefort.
Annual traffic, estimated between 2015 and 2023, confirms its continuing importance in the regional rail network. At the same time, the station retains a logistics function with freight, especially for the port of Rochefort. Its inscription in the heritage protects an architectural and historical testimony of transportation in New Aquitaine.
