Stone cross: classification by decree of 4 August 1933
Origin and history
The stone cross of Hamel is a historical monument located in the municipality of Hamel, in the department of Nord (Hautes-de-France). Dated from the 17th century, it was classified by ministerial decree on August 4, 1933, which attests to its heritage importance. Today it belongs to the commune and is located approximately at 99 Rue Martial Detournay.
The stone crosses of this period were often erected for religious or commemorative purposes, marking gathering places, crossroads or village entrances. In the countryside of Hauts-de-France in the 17th century, these monuments played a social and spiritual role, serving as reference points for collective processions or prayers. Their presence also reflected the influence of the Church in the organization of rural communities.
The location of this cross is considered "a priori satisfactory" (note 7/10), according to data from the Merimée database. Its exact address, derived from GPS coordinates, is supplemented by administrative information, such as Hamel's Insee code (59280).
