Origin and history
Hotel Nicolle de La Place is a former Renaissance-style mansion in the old town of Montmélian, Savoie. Built in the heart of an urban setting marked by the rock of Tormery and the banks of Isère, it stands out for its elegant architecture, crowned with a clock and a bell tower. The building has been partially included in the inventory of historic monuments since 8 September 1949, with protection covering its facades on courtyard, staircase and elevation.
In the 19th century, the Nicolle de La Place family rented the building to General Thomas Pillet until his death in 1850. The municipality of Montmélian then purchased the hotel to transfer the town hall, then installed in a small area on the parapet. In 1869, the municipal administration moved to the 1st floor, while the ground floor was rented to a merchant and the 2nd floor to the municipal staff. After work in the 1930s, the town hall left in 1984 for a new town hall, leaving room for a historical museum run by a local association.
In November 2020, after a rehabilitation, Hotel Nicolle de La Place became the headquarters of the town hall. This return is part of a dynamic of valorisation of heritage, while the former city hall of 1984 is now occupied by the services of the Community of Communes Heart of Savoy. The monument thus illustrates the evolution of the public uses of a private building, between historical memory and administrative modernity.
