Origin and history

The Château de Demoret is an emblematic building in Trévol, in the Allier department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This neogothic house, surrounded by moat, suffered a devastating fire in 1975, which destroyed its chestnut frame, the second floor and the attic. The roof, initially 4 meters high, housed a campanile and carved dorms, now missing.

In the 14th century, the castle belonged to a family with its name, including Jean Demoret, knight and attorney general of Bourbonnais. In 1482 Antoine de Montjournal, counselor of the cardinal of Bourbon, became his lord, but the fief quickly changed hands: as early as 1503, Pierre de Bonnay was the new owner. Later, in the 17th century, the seigneury passed to the Couffier family, which kept it until the early 19th century, with Simon de Coiffier de Moret as the last notable owner.

The castle thus illustrates the evolution of the noble families of Bourbonnais, while bearing the traces of an architectural heritage transformed by the hazards of history, including the fire of 1975 which profoundly altered its original structure.
