Origin and history
The Dolmen du Gouty, also known as Peyre-Levade du Puy Saint-Georges, is a megalithic monument located in Valderiès, Tarn department, Occitanie region. This dolmen, dated from the Neolithic, consists of a massive cover table measuring 2.50 m long by 1.80 m wide, resting on two pillars. The funeral chamber, facing east/west, is small (1.20 m by 0.90 m) and has been searched several times, revealing a sword.
Ranked as historical monuments since November 24, 1960, this dolmen is a typical example of the megalithic constructions of the region. According to a local legend, the three stones making up the building were lost by the Virgin while she was transporting them to build the Cathedral of Albi. This oral tradition adds a folk dimension to this archaeological site.
The excavations and studies carried out on this dolmen have been documented, notably in the book Les Megalithes du département du Tarn (1981) by Jean Lautier, which provides details of its structure and historical context. The site is referenced in the Mérimée base and remains an important testimony of the funeral and cultural practices of Neolithic in the south of France.
