Origin and history
The Montholon Press, also known as the Champvallon Press, is a historic building located in the department of Yonne, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built mainly in the 18th century, it is distinguished by its structure in bricks with a harped chain and in flint kidneys. Although rebuilt at that time, it retains some architectural elements dating from the 14th century, attesting to its seniority and importance in the region.
Around 1789, the press was dismantled and moved to a specially constructed pan, located on Rue Saint-Vincent in Montholon. This shift demonstrates its continued usefulness and its adaptation to local wine or agricultural needs. The press, as well as the building that houses it, was registered as historic monuments by order of 26 July 2002, thereby recognizing its heritage value.
This balance press illustrates the construction techniques and agricultural practices of Burgundy in the 18th century. Its inscription as a historical monument allows to preserve a material testimony of the economic and social activities of the period, especially related to the production of wine or cider, essential in this wine region.
