Origin and history

The castle of Baclair, located in Nointot in the Seine-Maritime, is a residence built between 1560 and 1625, illustrating the Cauchian architecture of the epochs Henri IV and Louis XIII. Initiated by Charles de Monchy and his wife Charlotte de Beauclair, he was completed by their son, Governor of Peronne and Marshal of France. The estate then passed on to the families of Saint-Julien and Montault, who made modifications in the 19th century, such as the elevation of the central body and the construction of a chapel.

Transformed into a prison during the Revolution, the castle was returned to the Marquis de Montault under the Consulate. In the 19th century, it was restored and enlarged, with the addition of a wing and stables in 1887. The circular dovecote, typical of the period, and the body of brick and limestone houses were listed as historical monuments in 1934. The park was renovated around 1925, and the site successively housed an agricultural college (1947) and a medical and social institute (1970).

Calletot's fief, renamed Baclair in 1578, initially depended on Hallebosc's Barony. Michel de Baclair launched the construction, taken over by Charles de Monchy and his son Adrien. The castle, a private property, remains closed to the public but bears witness to the architectural and social evolution of Normandy between Renaissance and modern times.
