Origin and history
The Hoerdt Farm is an emblematic rural building from the beginning of the eighteenth century, located at 26 rue de la République in the Alsatian municipality of Hoerdt (Bas-Rhin). Its organization in discontinuous U, with a gable shed overlooking the street, reflects the local architectural practices of the time. The presence of a vaulted cellar in a cradle, a large paneled room with an integrated clock, and a sandstone well with a wooden balance testify to its mixed use, both agricultural and residential. According to oral tradition, construction was commissioned for an innkeeper in 1723, a date engraved on the door of the cellar, although a later inscription (1890) appears on the pedestrian door.
Ranked among the historical monuments since 1984, this farm is distinguished by its protected elements: facades, roofs of the four buildings surrounding the courtyard, and especially the stube (common room lambrissée) on the ground floor. These features are a preserved example of the 18th century Alsatian rural habitat, where agricultural activities, commerce (inn) and family life were mixed. The reference to a construction date (1723) and a renovation or modification (1890) suggests continued occupation and adaptation to the changing needs of its owners.
The inscription in the title of historical monuments, formalized by decree of 8 October 1984, relates specifically to facades, roofs, and stube, highlighting their heritage value. This status protects not only the exterior architecture, but also rare interior arrangements, such as the walled room with apparent lights. The streetside location, with an entrance passage integrated with the shed, also indicates a design designed to facilitate exchanges with the outside, typical of the inn farms of the region.
The historical context of Hordt in the 18th century was marked by a dynamic rural economy, where farms played a central role in agricultural production and the reception of travellers. The presence of a clock in the common room suggests a relatively high social status for the owner, probably linked to his innkeeper activity. The sandstone well, local material, and the wooden pendulum recall the artisanal techniques of the time, while the U structure allowed a functional separation between living, working and storage spaces.
