Origin and history
The castle of Pujos, located in the commune of Roquebrune (Gers, Occitanie region), is a late example of a fortified house built in the 16th century. This monument illustrates the transition between the medieval defensive castles and the aristocratic residences of the Renaissance, with elements such as murderers and firemouths, characteristic of military fortifications.
Ranked among the Historical Monuments, Pujos Castle was partially protected by decree of 30 March 1978. This decree specifically covers the facades and roofs, the spiral staircase, as well as three original chimneys located on the ground floor and on the first floor. These architectural elements demonstrate the historic and artistic significance of the building.
The location of the castle, in the Gers department, places this monument in a rural and agricultural context typical of medieval and modern Occitanie. At that time, fortified castles served not only as seigneurial residences, but also as checkpoints and protections for local populations, in an area marked by conflict and social tensions.
The available information indicates that the Pujos Castle is still standing and seems well located, with geographical precision deemed "very satisfactory". However, the sources do not specify whether the monument is open to the public, used as a place of accommodation or reception, or whether it is the subject of guided tours.
