Origin and history

The Bohin Manufacture, located in Saint-Sulpice-sur-Risle, Orne, is an industrial complex founded in 1833 by Benjamin Bohin. Originally specialized in the manufacture of needles and pins, the factory extended in 1866 with the acquisition of the current site, including foundry, wire-trailer and pin mill. Rebuilt around 1880, it embodies the Norman industrial revolution, while preserving 19th century machines still in operation.

In 2014, part of the site was transformed into a museum, valuing local know-how and intangible heritage, such as Alençon lace (classified at UNESCO). The project, carried out by the community of communes and workers, incorporates a path set by François Confino. The museum explores nine themes, from Bohin's history to art crafts, while maintaining the productive activity of the site.

The factory, partially classified as a historical monument in 1995, organizes temporary exhibitions (textile art, animation cinema) and events such as the Feasted Needle. His label Normandy Impressionist Festival (2016) highlights its cultural anchor, with an exhibition dedicated to the founder, Benjamin Bohin. The site remains a rare example of a living industry combining heritage and innovation.

The Bohin Manufacture also illustrates the transmission of know-how, such as that of Eymeric François, designer of pins, or partnerships with contemporary artists (Fanny Ferré, Debbie Smyth). Its model combines historical preservation — with buildings restored by Jean-Marie Mandon — and economic dynamism, making it a key player in Norman industrial tourism.
