Origin and history

The Matheysin Museum was established on the initiative of the Friends of the Museum Association from 1978, before being officially inaugurated in 1994. Its collections come from deposits of the Musée Dauphinois, donations of individuals and 40 years of various acquisitions (archaeology, fine arts, ethnology, local history). The building itself, an 18th century mansion, is backed by a 12th century medieval tower, mixing architectural and historical heritage.

The permanent exhibitions illustrate human evolution in Matheysin, from prehistory to the 19th century, with archaeological objects, archives, traditional costumes and artisanal tools. Reconstitutions, models and educational videos complete the museum. The museum particularly highlights the rural, artisanal and industrial activities that have marked the territory, as its themes (trades, housing, religious practices) attest.

Labeled Museum of France, the establishment is distinguished by its location in La Mure (Isère), in a building classified for its hybrid heritage interest (medieval and classical). The collections cover various fields: Gallo-Roman archaeology, ancient photographs, modern art, or industrial techniques. The official address, 13 rue du Colonel Escallon, corresponds to a site whose geographical accuracy is considered fair (note 5/10).
