Origin and history

The Cross of the Malloué Cemetery is a Catholic religious monument located in the Malloué Communal Cemetery, a delegated commune integrated since 2016 in Souleuvre en Bocage. It is located in the Calvados department in Normandy, on the heights of the gorges of La Vire. In the immediate vicinity of Notre-Dame Church, this cross bears witness to the local Christian architecture and its anchoring in the funeral landscape.

The cross is dated from the 18th century, a period marked in Normandy by intense agricultural and artisanal activity, where religious monuments played a central role in community life. These cemetery crosses often served as a spiritual landmark and a place of recollection for the inhabitants, reflecting the Christian traditions of the time.

The building was listed as historic monuments on November 23, 1970, recognizing its heritage value. This protection is part of a broader approach to preserving Norman architectural and religious heritage, especially in Calvados, where many similar monuments are listed.
