Door and remains of the enclosure: classification by order of 15 March 1938

Origin and history

The enclosure of Montarcher, located in the eponymous village in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, is a 12th century monument. This fortified vestige, typical of medieval defensive constructions, illustrates the strategic concerns of the time, where villages protected themselves behind ramparts to guard against conflicts and invasions. The remains of this enclosure, including its door, have been preserved until today, providing an overview of the urban planning and construction techniques of this period.

In the 12th century, the region which now corresponds to Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes was marked by a feudal organization, where the local lords played a central role in protecting the population and managing the territories. The enclosures like Montarcher served not only to defend the inhabitants, but also to assert the power of the lords in their domain. These structures were often accompanied by surveillance systems and controlled access points, such as the door still visible today.

Daily life was organized around these fortifications, which delineated the community and economic space of the village.
