Origin and history
The Lapidaire Museum was created in 1950 to preserve and exhibit architectural and sculptural fragments from the Saint-Pierre Abbey Church in Mozac and earlier buildings. These elements, such as chipping modillons, foliage or figurative capitals, and other carved decorations, were discovered near the abbey and its outbuildings. They offer a valuable testimony of the work of the stone tailors of the Middle Ages and allow us to imagine the appearance of the building in the Romanesque era.
The museum is associated with Saint-Pierre Abbey Church, a historic monument whose architectural and artistic understanding it completes. Exhibits from local excavations or discoveries illustrate sculpture techniques and decorative styles used during the Romanesque period. These lapidary elements, often fragmentary, reveal details about the religious and artisanal life of the region.
Located in Mozac, in the department of Puy-de-Dôme, the museum benefits from the label Musée de France. Its official address is the Place de l'Abbaye, although GPS coordinates suggest a nearby location at 25 Rue de l'Abbaye. The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair, which may reflect historical adjustments or urban evolutions around the abbatial site.
