Origin and history
The manor house of Fontaine-la-Mallet was an emblematic building located in the municipality of the same name, in Seine-Maritime (Normandie). Built at the end of the 15th century, it was modified in the 18th century and served as a residence for the Havre family of the Mallet de Graville. This building, combining brick, stone and wood, reflected the typical architecture of Norman manors of that time.
The mansion was listed as historic monuments on December 3, 1934, recognizing its heritage value. However, it was totally destroyed during the bombings of September 1944, in the context of the Second World War. After its demolition, a water treatment plant was erected at its site, marking the end of this historic heritage.
Today, the site no longer houses the mansion, but its history remains documented in archives and databases like Mérimée. The commune of Fontaine-la-Mallet thus preserves the memory of this missing monument, symbol of an architectural and family past marked by the hazards of history.
