Origin and history

The Château du Lonzat is a building located in Jaligny-sur-Besbre, in the department of Allier, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in 1643, it is representative of 17th century seigneurial architecture in Bourbonnais. Its history is marked by family alliances and successive transmissions, reflecting the social dynamics of the time.

The fief du Lonzat entered the Fradel family in 1607, through the marriage of Marc Fradel, squire and seigneur of La Jarrye, with Martha de Terrières, heir of the estate. It was only in 1643, when their grandson Jean-François de Fradel married Michelle Brirot, that the present castle was erected. This marriage marks the foundation of the building as we know it today.

In the 19th century, the castle passed into the hands of the Clayeux family, which remained its owner until 1919. This period corresponds to an era of social and economic transformation in France, where castles gradually lose their defensive role to become residences or symbols of prestige. In 1997, Lonzat Castle was listed as a historic monument, recognizing its heritage and architectural value.

Historical sources mention local studies, such as those published in Les Cahiers Bourbonnais (2011), which deepen the history of the castle and its anchor in the territory. This work highlights its importance in the landscape of the castles of Allier and Bourbonnais, while documenting the families that have owned and transformed it over the centuries.
