Origin and history

Villa Verguin is a remarkable house on Réunion Island, located at 31 rue Rhin-et-Danube in Saint Paul. Built during the 2nd quarter of the 19th century, it embodies the bourgeois architecture of this period in the French colonies. Its additional listing of the Historic Monuments on December 8, 1988, covers not only the villa itself, but also its two corner pavilions, outbuildings, courtyard, walkway paving, as well as the fence and bar.

This official inscription highlights the heritage value of the ensemble, which reflects the way of life of the local elites under the July monarchy. The Verguin villa, with its preserved architectural elements, offers a representative example of the affluent residences of the Indian Ocean in the 19th century, mixing European influences and adaptations to the tropical climate.

Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum bases, confirm its status as a protected monument and specify its exact address, as well as the specific elements protected by the 1988 decree. The location, although noted as "passable" (level 5/10) in the data, remains sufficiently documented to make it an identifiable site in the Réunion heritage.
