Origin and history
The Château du Haut-Rasné, located in the commune of Chahaignes (Sarthe, Pays de la Loire), is a building built in the late 19th century. It embodies the Gothic architectural style, marked by medieval elements such as lancettes, warheads and stained glass windows. Its appearance evokes strong castles, although it was erected long after this historical period, reflecting the taste of the era for medieval revivalism.
The castle is distinguished by its neat exterior decoration, including mouldings and a small round tower located at the end of a terrace. A large cellar, opening onto a cloister, completes the architectural ensemble. These features illustrate the influence of monastic and defensive models, typical of the neogothic, while integrating comfort elements of the 19th century.
Since 21 December 1984, the castle of Haut-Rasné has been listed as a historical monument. This protection recognizes its heritage value, both for its architecture and for its testimony of the 19th century's enthusiasm for historical styles. The monument thus belongs to the list of remarkable castles of the Sarthe, a region rich in medieval and post-medieval heritage.
