Origin and history
Château du Bas is a 17th century building located in the municipality of Braine, in the department of Aisne, in the Hauts-de-France region. Today, only the cellars remain, remains of a lost construction. These cellars, as well as a door, were listed as historic monuments in 1927, testifying to the heritage importance of the site despite its fragmented state.
The precise location of the castle is indicated as being at 40 Rue Saint-Yved in Braine, in an area whose geographical accuracy is estimated to be fair. The monument is referenced in the Mérimée and Monumentum bases, with protected elements including the old cellars and a door, inscribed by two separate decrees in May and June 1927. No information is available on its current use, such as visits or services offered.
The historical context of the seventeenth century in the Picardie region (now Hauts-de-France) is marked by a period of reconstruction and architectural development after the unrest of the religious wars. The castles of that time often served as residences for local aristocracy or symbols of power, while playing an economic and social role in the organisation of rural territories. Although the sources do not specify the sponsors or occupants of the château du Bas, its inscription as a historical monument highlights its interest in understanding the regional architectural heritage.
