Origin and history
The Coatmen dungeon, located in the municipality of Tremeven in the Côtes-d'Armor, is one of the first medieval stone dungeons in the department. Built in stone blocking, cement and braided coating, it testifies to the castral construction techniques of the time. Its remains, including a castral chapel, were still visible until 1966, when the dungeon was already in ruins.
In 1927, the dungeon was listed as historic monuments by ministerial decree, recognizing its heritage value. Despite this protection, the remains of the dungeon were deliberately destroyed in 1993 by the landowner, erasing a significant part of this medieval Breton heritage.
The Coatmen site is part of a regional context marked by the construction of stone castles and dungeons from the Middle Ages, reflecting the defensive and symbolic needs of the local lords. These buildings served as both fortified residences and power centres, organizing the economic and social life of the surrounding territories.
The destruction of the remains in 1993 raises questions about the preservation of the heritage, especially when monuments, although protected, are on private property. Today, Coatmen's dungeon no longer exists physically, but its history remains documented in archives and databases like Mérimée.
Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its importance as an early example of castral architecture in Brittany. Its inscription in 1927 and its mention in the lists of historical monuments of the Côtes-d'Armor make it a case of study for researchers interested in the disappearance of the built heritage.
