Origin and history

The Monastery of Colombier-le-Cardinal is a religious building located in the municipality of the same name, in Ardèche. Dating from the 14th century, it represents a medieval heritage typical of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Its remains, partially preserved, bear witness to the monastic architecture of this time.

The building was listed as historic monuments by order of 31 May 1927, thereby recognizing its heritage value. Today, it is one of the protected monuments of the Ardèche department, although its present state and precise uses (visit, rental, etc.) are not detailed in the available sources. Its exact location, close to Route Départementale 406, allows it to be located in a rural ardèche.

In the 14th century, monasteries played a central role in local life, combining religious, economic and social functions. In Ardèche, as elsewhere in France, these establishments were often centres of knowledge, welcome for travellers, and major actors in agriculture or crafts. Their architecture reflected both their spiritual vocation and their integration into the rural landscape.
