Origin and history
The Château des Netumières, located in the town of Erbrée (Ille-et-Vilaine, Brittany), dates from the 16th century. This mansion, restored in the 19th century, once retained defensive elements such as moat, a drawbridge and an e-mail. It was the seat of a seigneury with the right of high justice, symbolized by three-and-four-pot patibular forks. The architectural complex includes the castle, communes, a former manor farm of medieval origin, as well as isolated elements such as towers, pigeons and terraces. An ancient bridge, probably of Gallo-Roman origin, also remains nearby.
The castle is associated with Hay's family, which made it its fief. It was listed as historical monuments on 22 March 1973, protecting its facades, roofs, terraces and an ancient bridge. Dependencies, including a dovecote, bear witness to its past importance as a seigneurial estate. Today, the site retains traces of its medieval and Renaissance history, although some defensive structures have disappeared.
The Netumières domain illustrates the evolution of Breton manors between the Middle Ages and the modern era, combining residential, agricultural and judicial functions. Its inscription as a historic monument highlights its heritage value, both for its architecture and its role in local history. The nearby Gallo-Roman remains add a rare archaeological dimension to this site already rich in historical strata.
