Origin and history

The City of Trades and Arts of Limoges is a cultural place dedicated to companionship and the achievements of companions, housing about 75 craft works created since the 19th century. Set up on Rue de la Règle, in the historic district of La Cité, it adjoins the garden of the Bishop's House. This site occupies an extension of the late 19th century diocesan seminary, itself built on the remains of the former Abbey of the Rule, which disappeared in the 18th century. The permanent and temporary exhibitions celebrate the know-how of the best workers of France, especially in the construction trades.

The monument faces the ancient canonical houses, where the Companions of the Tour de France de Limoges established their siege. The ground floor presents a permanent exhibition on companionship and its corporations, while the basement, located in the cellars of the Abbey of the Rule, hosts temporary exhibitions. The site also includes a documentation centre, a multimedia centre and a conference room, reinforcing its role as a teaching and cultural space.

The history of the place is closely linked to that of companionship, an artisanal and educational movement whose roots date back centuries. The integration of the remains of the abbey of the Rule and the proximity of canonical houses underline the continuity between religious heritage and artisanal traditions. The Cité des métiers et des arts thus embodies the transmission of know-how, while valuing the architectural and historical heritage of Limoges.
