Origin and history

The Grand-Fougeray Cross is a monumental cross located in front of the south façade of the church of the village of Grand-Fougeray, in the department of Ille-et-Vilaine, in Brittany. It dates from the 15th century and is distinguished by its architecture: an octagonal barrel topped by a quadrilobed cross. This cross is a typical example of the monumental Breton crosses of that time, often placed near churches to mark a sacred place or important crossroads.

The western face of the cross bears a representation of Christ on the cross, accompanied by the Blessed Virgin and Saint John, while the face is present a Virgin to the Child with a Thuriferous angel. These sculptures illustrate the religious and symbolic importance of the monument. The cross was listed as historic monuments on March 22, 1930, recognizing its heritage and artistic value.

Located at 2 Place de l'Église, 35390 Grand-Fougeray, this cross belongs to the commune and is accessible to the public. Its conservation status and precise location were assessed, with a location accuracy considered fair (note 5/10). It bears witness to medieval Christian art in Brittany and the popular devotion of the time, where the monumental crosses served both as spiritual landmarks and as gathering points for the faithful.
