Sixteenth century cross in the cemetery surrounding the church of Broons-sur-Vilaine (Box A 223): inscription by order of 25 February 1946
Origin and history
The cemetery cross of Broons-sur-Vilaine is a monumental granite cross located in the cemetery of the church of this village, now attached to the commune of Châteaubourg, in Ille-et-Vilaine. Dating from the 16th century, it is distinguished by its slightly truncated octagonal barrel, placed on a square base with the angles down. A stone base supports the whole, while a carved Christ adorns the cross. This monument illustrates the Breton religious architecture of the Renaissance, marked by the use of granite and purified geometric shapes.
The cross was listed as historical monuments on 25 February 1946, recognizing its heritage value. It testifies to the importance of cemetery crosses in Breton Christian culture, serving as both a spiritual landmark and a funeral marker. Its location in the former cemetery of Broons-sur-Vilaine, now integrated in Châteaubourg, highlights its anchoring in the local and religious history of the region.
From an architectural point of view, the cross combines elements typical of the era: a more recent octagonal prism supports the base, perhaps reflecting restorations or later additions. The carved Christ, although described without further details, recalls the central role of crucifixion in Christian iconography. The cross, owned by the commune, remains a preserved example of the Breton funerary heritage, accessible in its original setting.
