Facades and roofs (Case D 625): inscription by order of 23 October 1972

Origin and history

Château de la Bonnelière is a 17th-century building located in the commune of Saint-Michel-Mont-Mercure, Vendée. This monument is representative of the residential architecture of this period, marked by a transition between Renaissance and classical styles. Its facades and roofs, typical of this period, have been preserved until today.

The castle was partially protected as historical monuments in 1972, with an inscription specifically covering its facades and roofs. This official recognition underlines its heritage importance in the Vendée department. The site is located in the canton of Pouzauges, a rural area of the Pays de la Loire where the castles of this time often bear witness to the influence of local noble or bourgeois families.

In the 17th century, the region of Pays de la Loire was marked by a mainly agricultural economy, with lords or landowners playing a central role in the social organization. Castles like Bonnelière served both as residences and symbols of power, while participating in local economic life through the management of surrounding lands.
